It's that time of autumn

It’s that time of autumn where you have to admit that summer really has finished, and finally start adjusting to the inevitable onset of winter. Time to put all those summer clothes away and dig out the warm jumpers, raincoats and boots.

Change-over time, too, in the fields, where we’ve stripped out the cucumbers and beans and are harvesting the last of the green and yellow courgettes and basil before the frost strikes. Seeing the end of our colourful Mediterranean veg is rather like reluctantly packing away that summer holiday t-shirt- full of memories of sunshine, but just not quite the thing for this time of year…

And just as it’s quite comforting to rediscover a favourite woolly jumper, so the seasonal veg come along at just the right time for some comfort food as the temperatures drop. We’re harvesting sweet carrots and leeks, perfect for winter casseroles, as well as four different types of kale- green, curly, black Tuscan and red- all the colours and texture of a fairisle cardi!

So don’t despair now summer’s gone- wrap up warm with some winter veg!
